HPP Kalimanci

HPP Kalimanci is built on Kalimanci artificial lake by catching the waters of the river Bregalnica, on the territory of municipality Makedonska Kamenica.

It was put into operation in 1969 with an installed capacity of 12,5 MW and is part of the hydro system Bregalnica. The main purpose of the lake is the irrigation of about 28.000 ha, mainly areas under rice in Kocani Valley, but also of a part of the arable land in Ovce Pole. For this purpose two channels have been built; the right is 98 km long and carries the water to Ovce Pole, while the left is 36 km long and irrigates Kocansko pole. Previously, water is used to generate electricity through the hydroelectric plant Kalimanci.

The dam of HPP Kalimanci is stone embankment with clay core, 92 m high, and 240 m long. The lake is 14 km long and 0,3 km wide, and the maximum depth reaches 80 m. It covers an area of 4,23 km2 and accumulates 127 million m3 of water. The dam overflow is surface-type and located on the right shore of the reservoir Kalimanci with a capacity of 900 m3/s. Water from the reservoir Kalimanci to the machine room goes through an inlet tunnel with a length of 430 m and a pipeline with a length of 80 m, which splits into two tubes for two turbines separately. The pipes for both turbines feature a butterfly turbine clasp. The flow of water in the tunnel is 18 m3/s.

In the machine room of HPP Kalimanci there is the command room, two Francis turbines with a vertical axis that power two synchronous generators with static excitation and installed capacity of 6,9 MW. The output voltage of the generator is 6.3 kV and via transformer 6.3/35 kV electricity is transmitted to the distribution facility located in the same building from where via 35 kV transmission lines it is transmitted to Vinica, Delchevo, Makedonska Kamenica and via transformer 35/10 kV and 10 kV transmission line it is transmitted to the surrounding villages. After the work, through the turbine circuit the water through the drainage channel flows into the river Bregalnica.
Annual electricity production is 26 GWh.

Net drop 80 m
Throughput 18 m3/s
Turbine type Francis turbine with horizontal axis
Generator type Synchronous generator with static excitation
Installed capacity 13.8 MW
Efficiency coefficient >90%
Average annual output 26 GWh

Largest hydro facility in the municipality Makedonska Kamenica is Kalimanci Lake with a volume of 127 million m3. It receives Kamenichka River - which runs through the town of Makedonska Kamenica and Lukovichka and Ribnichka River and then the water flows out to Bregalnica River.

Bregalnica River is the largest left tributary of the river Vardar. In the upper reaches, where the dam and the hydroelectric plant Kalimanci are positioned, Bregalnica has had torrential character, but the construction of the dam resulted in inverse and balanced flow.

In the waters of the reservoir Kalimanci the ichthyofauna is composed of a greater number of species of fish, including: carp (Ciprinus Caprio), catfish (Silurus glanis), roach (Rutilus rutilus), Kostresh (Perca fluviatillis), chub (Leiuciscus Cephalus), skobust (Chondrostoma nasus), soncharka (Lepomis gibbosus), linjak (Tinca Tinca). Natural breeding water of carp, chub, skobust and roach are found primarily on gentle terrain in the middle part of the reservoir Kalimanci. Natural breeding water of catfish is found mostly in the upper part of the reservoir at the beginning of the formation.
